My Vision

By Graeme Baker, Founder of AI's A Beach
Surf Coast, Victoria, Australia

Welcome to AI’s A Beach! I’m Graeme Baker, the founder of this initiative where we make artificial intelligence as inspiring and engaging as a day at the beach. Our mission is to empower educators, researchers, students, and creatives to embrace AI ethically and effectively, unlocking its potential to transform productivity, learning, and innovation.

A Childhood Shaped by Media

I was born in 1960, and from the earliest moments of my life, media played a pivotal role. My mother quickly discovered the advantages of television as a babysitter—or, at least, an amusement device. I spent countless hours in my bouncenet, captivated by the flickering black-and-white images of Australian children’s educational shows like Romper Room and Play School.

Later, dance and music films, classic comedies, and television were my greatest fascinations growing up. I could name countless influences: Diahann Carroll’s captivating drama, Lucille Ball’s brilliant comedy, Shirley Temple’s charming tap routines, Judy Garland’s heartfelt performances, Mickey Rooney’s boundless energy, Bing Crosby’s smooth crooning, Danny Kaye’s unmatched comic genius, Shari Lewis and her delightful Lamb Chop, and the timeless antics of the Three Stooges, Laurel and Hardy, Carol Burnett, Mary Tyler Moore, and Don Knotts. Among them all, one of my greatest heroes—both for comedy and tragedy—was Jerry Lewis.

Closer to home, Australian entertainment left its own indelible mark. Films like Smiley captured the charm of life in the bush, with Colin Petersen’s portrayal of the mischievous young Smiley Greevins becoming an enduring symbol of Aussie childhood. Skippy the Bush Kangaroo brought adventure and heart to screens, with Garry Pankhurst as Sonny and Ken James as ranger Mark Hammond, while Ed Devereaux provided a steady presence as park leader Matt Hammond.

Beyond these iconic productions, figures like Chips Rafferty embodied the rugged, relatable spirit of Australian cinema, while John-Michael Howson, Nancy Cato, and Penne Hackforth-Jones left their mark on both stage and screen. On television, entertainers like Happy Hammond and Zig & Zag brought joy and humor to children’s programming, becoming cherished companions to young audiences.

Together, these stories and performances ignited in me a lifelong love of storytelling, music, and the boundless creative potential of media.

From Classic Cinema to Cutting-Edge AI

This early exposure to diverse media inspired me to explore storytelling more deeply, academically and professionally. I pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema Studies and Art History, a Postgraduate Diploma in Screen Studies, and an Executive Master of Arts in Leadership and Management. These academic pursuits gave me a strong foundation in understanding the power of media to entertain, educate, and connect people.

Over the years, I’ve explored how media and technology intersect to create transformative experiences:

  • As an educator and mentor: I’ve guided students in mastering media and communication skills while using emerging technologies like AI to enhance their learning.

  • As a content creator: My YouTube channel has made complex ideas in media theory accessible to students worldwide for well over a decade.

  • As a researcher and professional: I’ve examined how media, technology, and storytelling shape immersive environments and digital experiences.

Why AI’s A Beach?

AI’s A Beach is the culmination of my lifelong fascination with how media and technology inspire creativity and connect communities. Just as media opened my world as a child, AI opens new opportunities for engagement, innovation, and learning for people today.
